Professional membership: The NEBOSH International Diploma in Environmental Management meets the academic requirements for Practitioner Membership (PIEMA) of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA). It is additionally accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM ) as meeting the academic requirements for Specialist membership (SIIRSM). In addition, diplomates will have the opportunity to attend the annual NEBOSH Diploma Graduation ceremony.

Entry requirements

Minimum standard of English required for students. NEBOSH recommends that students undertaking this qualification should reach a minimum standard of English equivalent to an International English Language Testing System score of 7.0 or higher in order to be accepted onto an International Diploma programme.

Qualification Covers

The NEBOSH International Diploma in Environmental Management covers environmental management principles, multilateral treaties relating to environmental management and ways to prevent and control pollution.

The curriculum is made to provide students with the necessary knowledge, no matter where they may be employed, and to enable them to have a positive impact on environmental management standards and practises at all organisational levels. There are two units in the International Diploma in Environmental Management.

Course Syllabus-NEBOSH IDip

Unit ED1: Controlling environmental aspects
  • Key environmental cycles and the effects of human activity on the environment.
  • Environmental leadership and Environmental management systems and emergency planning.
  • Environmental risk evaluation and control and Environmental performance evaluation.
  • Sustainability and Waste management.
  • Managing emissions to the atmosphere and Managing emissions to controlled waters.
  • Control of environmental noise and Waste management.
  • Hazardous substances and contaminated land.
  • Energy use.
Unit IDEM2: Environmental regulation
  • Enforcement of environmental legislation.
  • Pollution prevention and control multilateral treaties.

Unit assessments

Unit ED1: Controlling environmental aspects
  • A 3-hour written exam is used to evaluate the taught subject ED1.
  • Candidates select which five questions out of the eight “long-answer” questions (20 marks each) to answer on the written test.
  • Passing Grade: 45%
Unit IDEM2: Environmental regulation
  • Unit IDEM2 consists of a written assignment set by NEBOSH.
  • The report should be approximately 8000 words in total, excluding the references, bibliography and appendices. No penalty will be applied to reports which exceed 8000 words but students should aim to keep their word count under 12000 and Pass Standard -50%.

Unit certificates

Students who are successful in an individual unit will be issued with a unit certificate, normally within 40 working-days of the issue of the unit result notification. Units are not graded and the unit certificates will show a ‘Pass’ only.
